12 Top Rumors Swirling Around NFL Training Camps

Peyton Manning has made a career out of helping wide receivers reach their full potential and then some. The success that Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie and Brandon Stokley, among others, have had is a testament to how Manning makes everyone around him better.

This is why Eric Decker probably couldn't ask for a better situation entering his third NFL season.

The former third-round pick from Minnesota surprised a great deal of people with a breakout 2011 campaign that saw him accumulate over 600 yards and eight touchdowns.

Now, Decker is going to have a reliably good passing quarterback under center to get him the ball.

Needless to say, expectations are high in Denver.

According to Mike Klis of The Denver Post, Manning and Decker look like they are in regular-season form.

Too bad for Peyton Manning and Eric Decker the regular season is still six weeks away. The quarterback and receiver are working together like they were ready yesterday. On a one-on-one red zone drill, Manning threw a well-timed back-shoulder pass with zip. Decker was blanketed by rookie corner Omar Bolden but the receiver turned as the ball was at his head, fell back and made a terrific catch as he landed on his backside. Score!

Okay, I understand it is the early stages of training camp. That being said, it is hard to question what Manning can do on the football field when healthy. Couple that with the fact that Decker produced solid statistics with Tim Tebow at quarterback in 2011, and you have the makings for something special here.

A 1,000-yard, double-digit touchdown season from Decker definitely isn't out of the realm of possibility in 2012.

Seek Expert Advice on Estate Planning | Steve Kaneski

I will start with a disclaimer: I am not an attorney or a certified financial planner. Much of this information is based on recent experience in redoing my wife?s and my personal estate plans.

Clearly, this is an area of extreme technical complexity that must be handled exactly right, and it is critical to seek the advice of your estate planner and attorney. I believe that a portion of the cost of estate planning may be deductible from income tax.

Everyone needs a will regardless of the size of his or her estate. Dying without a will necessitates probate of the estate, which can be very expensive and result in your assets being distributed in a manner that you may not have intended. In addition to a will, other items that I consider essential are a directive to physicians, or ?living will,? health care power of attorney, a statutory durable power of attorney, and documents designating your choice of guardians for your minor children.

Currently, the U.S. Tax Code allows a $5 million?per person estate tax exemption. When combined with the unlimited marital deduction (which states that an individual can leave an unlimited estate to their spouse without tax consequences), this allows up to $10 million to be passed to heirs without estate taxes.

Most estate planners suggest a will that leaves an amount to the surviving spouse up to the exempt amount in a trust (bypass trust), which then passes untaxed to the heirs if not spent. Growth in the trust is also outside estate taxes. The remainder of the estate passes to the surviving spouse under the unlimited deduction. Most advisers suggest that, if possible, the surviving spouse should live on this money rather than the bypass trust since it remains within the taxable estate. The amount of the current exemption can then be passed by the surviving spouse to the heirs ? again, without estate taxes.

The remainder of the estate will be subject to estate taxes based on the law at the time of death. The current $5 million exemption will allow a very high percentage of estates to pass down without taxation.

This exemption is scheduled to expire at the end of 2012, when it will return to $1 million. Most experts expect that the $5 million exemption will not be renewed, but they believe something more than $1 million will be allowed.

Several individuals have approached me with ideas for avoiding estate taxation. If you find yourself in a similar situation, I would advise extreme caution. Check out any suggested ?tax avoidance schemes? with your attorney or estate planner.

The likely change in the estate tax exemption presents either a dilemma or an opportunity for estate planning. Any gifts given during 2012 will be within the current exemption, but giving away assets to avoid estate taxes may not always be the best plan.

To qualify for exemption, gifts must be irrevocable. Individuals may make gifts of $13,000/year per person, which do not apply to the lifetime exemption. This means that a couple can give $26,000/year to each child and grandchild (or parent). Gifts that directly pay educational or health care expenses are also exempt.

Another vehicle for transfer of wealth without estate taxes is an insurance trust. A trust is established that is outside the estate of the donor that benefits specified persons. The trust can then purchase insurance, which passes free of estate and other taxes, to the beneficiaries upon the death of the donor. (Note that estate taxes will increase from the current rate of 35% to 55% at the end of 2012, if the law is not changed.)

A relatively low-cost vehicle to fund such a trust is a ?second-to-die? life insurance policy that covers the life of both of the donors and pays at the time of the second death. Depending on the amount of the premium, that can be paid by gifts that are within the annual exclusion of the beneficiaries, or this amount can be exceeded in 2012 and applied to the $5 million exemption.

Titling of assets is another potentially important issue. If you hold significant assets in an account with right of survival, upon your death, the assets pass to the survivor outside your will. This may mean that those moneys are not subject to the estate tax exemption mentioned above.

Finally, you must decide what to do with assets that may exceed the exemption and will be subject to estate taxation. Is it better to give 40%-50% of your assets to heirs and 50%-60% to the government, or give a significant amount free of taxes to a charity or charities of your choice? My personal feeling is that it may be a bad idea to make my children ?wealthy? after my death. It is my goal to provide for the education of my children and possibly grandchildren. Endowing a scholarship or chair or building may provide an enduring legacy.

I have barely scratched the surface of possibilities in estate planning. Perhaps this information will make you a better informed client when you begin the planning process. We should all pay careful attention to what is done (or worse, not done, since no action would return us to the $1 million exemption) by the legislature toward the end of 2012.

Obama to sign Israel security bill on eve of Romney visit

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will sign a bill to strengthen U.S.-Israeli military cooperation on Friday on the eve of a visit to Israel by his Republican presidential challenger, Mitt Romney.

Obama will seek to stress his commitment to Israel's security for American Jewish voters at a White House ceremony that appeared timed to upstage Romney, who has accused the president of undermining U.S.-Israeli ties.

Congress passed the legislation, the U.S.-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act, with broad support from Obama's Democrats and Republicans last week.

"The bill deepens our security cooperation with Israel by expanding our military assistance and providing Israel with access to additional equipment," White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said on Thursday.

Obama, criticized by some of Israel's U.S. supporters for being too tough on a close ally, wants to shore up his support among Jewish voters, who could prove critical in battleground states like Florida and Pennsylvania in the November 6 election.

Obama received 78 percent of the Jewish vote in the 2008 election, but a nationwide Gallup poll in June showed him down to 64 percent backing versus Romney's 29 percent.

Romney hopes his trip to Israel will resonate with Jewish voters at home. He will arrive there from London on Saturday and plans to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has had a strained relationship with Obama.

Obama angered many Israelis and their U.S. supporters last year when he insisted any negotiations on the borders of a future Palestinian state begin on the basis of lines that existed before Israel captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip in a 1967 war.

Obama visited Israel as a candidate in the 2008 campaign but has not done so as president. He has insisted security ties with Israel have never been stronger, though he has pressed Netanyahu to hold off on any attack on Iran's nuclear sites to give diplomacy and sanctions more time to work.

Romney has accused Obama of being too hard on Israel and not strong enough with Iran.

The new bill calls for enhanced cooperation with Israel - the staunchest U.S. ally in the Middle East and a major beneficiary of military aid - on missile defense and intelligence, and increased access to advanced weapons.

Relatives Want Mills Buried In Home Town | Ghanamma.com

|

Some relatives of the late President J.E.A. Mills are asking that his mortal remains be interred in his home town, Ekumfi Otuam, in the Central Region.

They have therefore asked those responsible for the funeral arrangements of the fallen national leader, to strongly consider that option.

At the Odomna family house of the late president, at Ekumfi Otuam on Thursday, Mbreteehen Kojo Mensah speaking for the family, said it would not be out of place to consider burying Prof Mills in the town.

When graphic.com.gh visited the town Thursday, the community was in mourning.

Many said they were beginning to accept the reality of the President?s death.

Mbretehen Mensah said in the last few months prior to his demise, President Mills had shown special interest in the family at Ekumfi Otuam of which he (Prof Mills) was the Ebusuabaatan.

He said the Late President had in May, requested for land to build a new family house for the family.

The family members sat in the old family house in a meeting and to receive condolences.

Mbretehen Mensah said President Atta-Mills? death was a great blow to the family and the whole Ekumfi state as he was
working towards resolving the water problem in the area.

Scalia Unconcerned About Money in Politics; People Aren't 'Sheep'

In a television interview set to air on C-SPAN on Sunday, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia dismissed concerns today about there being too much money in politics.

"I forget what the figures are," he said, "but I think we spend less on our presidential campaigns each year when there is a presidential election than the country spends on cosmetics."

Asked about concerns regarding the amount of influence from corporations, Scalia said he thinks Americans are smarter than to be controlled by what they see on TV. "They're not sheep," he said.

"If you believe that we ought to go back to monarchy. That the people are such sheep that they just swallow whatever they see on television or read in the newspapers? No. The premise of democracy is that people are intelligent and can discern the true from the false. At least, when as the campaign laws require, you know who is speaking. You can't speak anonymously. You have to say, you have to identify the people that are giving the message."

Scalia made the comments to C-SPAN's Brian Lamb for an interview that will air this Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET on the cable network's Q and A program. Scalia is on a book tour for his new book Reading Law: the Interpretation of Legal Texts, which he wrote with coauthor Bryan A. Garner.

And while Scalia said he thinks C-SPAN would broadcast Supreme Court arguments in their entirety if the court were to allow cameras, the justice said he doesn't think Americans would be served by sound bytes of video they'd be more likely to see.

They'd pay attention to clips and not the entirety of arguments that the court deals with on things like patent reform and the IRS "?with all sorts of dull stuff that only a lawyer could understand and perhaps get interested," Scalia said. "If the American people saw all of that they would be educated. But they wouldn't see all of that. Your outfit would carry it all, to be sure, but what most of the American people would see would be 30 second, 15 second takeouts from our argument and those takeouts would not be characteristic of what we do. They would be uncharacteristic."

He agreed that newspapers quote decisions and opinions, but argued there is a difference where it comes to video.

"Somehow when you see it live, an excerpt pulled out of an entire, when you see it live, it has a much greater impact. No, I am sure it will mis-educate the American people, not educate," he said.

Scalia seemed to also be tiring of questions regarding leaks -sourced from within the court- that appeared in news stories in the days following the health care decision . Some outlets reported that Chief Justice John Roberts' decision to vote with the liberals to uphold the individual mandate under Congress' taxing power had caused a personal rift between Roberts and the other conservative justices.

Asked about the leaks, Scalia at first said, "I wouldn't talk about it?"

He later added that differences of opinion have not damaged relationships on the court.

"I've criticized the opinions of some of my colleagues and we have remained friends just as they have criticized my opinions and we have remained friends. Look, this is the kind of a job if you can't disagree, even disagree vehemently, on the law without taking it personally and without hating the person who's on the other side you ought to find another job. That's it," he said.

Last week Scalia was asked by CNN's s Piers Morgan, whether he had a a falling out with Justice Roberts. Scalia said the leaks were unreliable and said, "No, I haven't had a falling out with Justice Roberts."

In the C-SPAN interview Scalia also addressed complaints that he had gone outside the record in his dissent in the recent immigration case by addressing President Obama's announcement (made after the immigration case had been argued but before it was released) of a new program that allows some young undocumented immigrants who entered the US as children to stay in the country.

Scalia said he was "surprised" by the criticism which included a call from Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne Jr. t for him to resign.

"I was surprised that anyone would have thought that the purpose for which I used the President's statement - and did not criticize the President's statement, in fact I said it might be right," he said.
