Second-deepest snowpack in North America on Mount Washington

Mount Washington is on a roll when it comes to early-season dumps.

After opening earlier than expected for the fourth season in a row, the resort welcomed a metre and a half of new snowfall over the past week. The mountain now boasts the second-deepest snowpack in North America.

"I know I'm beginning to sound like a broken record, but this is another unbelievable start to the season," laughs resort spokesperson Brent Curtain. "The snow keeps piling up and the temps are remaining low so the conditions really couldn't be any better than they are right now."

Mount Washington has a base of more than 200 centimetres and the forecast calls for more snow mixed with sunshine and cooler temperatures throughout the weekend.

Mount Washington has over 1,200 acres of terrain open on the frontside of the mountain. Seven of nine lifts are operating, carrying happy skiers and boarders to 69 of the mountain's 81 marked trails.

In addition to alpine terrain, the mountain has over 28 kms of pristine trails open for Nordic skiers and the popular Ozone Tubing Park is also open, providing snow sliding fun for the whole family. If you're an iPhone user looking to stay on top of the latest conditions and events at the mountain, visit the iTunes store and download the latest Mount Washington app for free.

The app, developed by Finger Food Studios, contains all the information you need to plan your day on the slopes in an easy to use format. There is also an innovative run tracker feature that enables you to manage your mileage on the mountain. For more information on the conditions, new app and the December Advent Calendar, visit mountwashington.ca.

Rice under fire from left over cabinet job

By Domenico Montanaro, NBC News Deputy Political Editor

It?s not just Benghazi anymore.

One of the most controversial energy projects in the nation also has become a flash point in the drama surrounding who may become the next secretary of state ? and it?s coming from the left instead of the right.

Back on Nov. 28, ?OnEarth,? published by the Natural Resources Defense Council, dug into?U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice?s financial disclosures and found that she and her husband have a stake in TransCanada, the company pushing for the Keystone XL Pipeline to be built.

NRDC officials say it's an important issue that must be discussed during the nomination process. But the timing of the report raises questions, as it is being surfaced by an environmental activist community that has previously given support to another potential secretary of state candidate ? Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

NBC News' Mark Murray explains why the partisan divide over the potential nomination of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice is intensifying.

The decision on whether to approve the pipeline goes through the State Department.

?If confirmed by the Senate, one of Rice?s first duties likely would be consideration, and potentially approval, of the controversial mega-project,? Scott Dodd at ?OnEarth? wrote. ?Rice's financial holdings could raise questions about her status as a neutral decision maker.?

Dodd noted that ?Rice owns stock valued between $300,000 and $600,000 in TransCanada, the company seeking a federal permit to transport tar sands crude 1,700 miles to refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast, crossing fragile Midwest ecosystems and the largest freshwater aquifer in North America.?

Bill McKibben, an anti-pipeline activist, told the publication: ?It?s really amazing that they?re considering someone for Secretary of State who has millions invested in these companies. The State Department has been rife with collusion with the Canadian pipeline builders, and it?s really distressing to have any sense that that might continue to go on.?

Susan Casey-Lefkowitz, the NRDC's director of international programs, sounded a less strident tone a day later: "What's most important is that she rid herself of her holdings in TransCanada and other tar sands-related companies, and we're confident she will do that ... What's most important is that we have a good, thorough review done.?

Danielle Droitsch, a senior attorney for the NRDC and director of the Canada Project, told First Read: ?We think Ambassador Rice has the credentials to be secretary of state, but if she were nominated, and then appointed, these holdings would have to be addressed.?

She added that ?high-level officials dealing with Keystone should not have any conflicts of interest.?

The likelihood is that, if nominated, Rice will have to divest herself of her TransCanada investment to avoid a conflict of interest.

Will new Obama appointments come this week? Is there a way to get both John Kerry and Susan Rice into the Obama cabinet? NBC News' Chuck Todd and Time's Joe Klein join the discussion.

The environmental group?s effort to shed light on Rice?s financial interest in TransCanada could be just an attempt, if Rice is nominated, to get a ?thorough review? and make sure it has a staunch ally in trying to thwart the project, as Casey-Lefkowitz said.

But could it also be a signal that the NRDC prefers another candidate for the job ? Sen. John Kerry, the other of the final two candidates reportedly being considered for the post?

After all, environmental groups have strongly supported Kerry in the past and have a long working relationship with him. Like they would for most Democrats in a presidential election, for example, the NRDC and the League of Conservation Voters, among others,?ran ads in the 2004 election boosting Kerry.

LCV even endorsed Kerry before the New Hampshire Democratic primary that year, although it has notably not spoken out about Rice.

Droitsch, however, would not address whom the NRDC?prefers?for the job.

?We?re trying to signal that the pipeline decision has to be conflict-free,? Droitsch said. ?That would pertain to any potential nominee. The president has the prerogative to nominate the person he believes is best for the position.?

The Senate will then raise questions, however, she said. And ?now is important to raise the issue ... We want to make sure that anyone who?s being considered would be free of those conflicts. That?s our primary interest right now.?

The NRDC, which has been very involved in efforts to block Keystone, is the environmental interest group most pressing the issue of Rice?s financials.

But others might not be as keen to see Kerry leave Capitol Hill. After all, consider that green groups already spent a lot of money trying to oust Republican Scott Brown from the Senate ? and were successful.

But if Kerry becomes secretary of state (or even defense secretary), his seat would become vacant, raising the potential for a costly and competitive special election.

?Who cares if the U.N. ambassador has a TransCanada stock. Who cares if the head of the FDA has TransCanada stock,? said a Democratic strategist and ally of the administration who is a veteran of confirmation battles.

?If she [Rice] were to be nominated, she would go through a process by which we look for financials conflicts. Maybe this stock would be identified as something that posed a conflict, and she would sell," the strategist said. "But she hasn't gone through that process, because she's not a nominee to anything. If they want to say that if she is the nominee, she should sell the stock, that's fine. But you can't legitimately hit her for having it now. And that is likely why NRDC backed off and no other environmental groups have piled-on.?

What really is going on here likely has less to do with Rice and whether she should ascend to secretary of state, and more with the NRDC leveraging pressure on the president and the administration to make sure the pipeline is rejected again once it comes up for approval. And that could be soon.

The next step in that approval phase, in fact, could come as early as next week, Droitsch said. TransCanada has applied for a shortened pipeline in hopes of having that approved ? something the NRDC strongly opposes. A Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement could be released by the State Department as early as next week, Droitsch said.

?It is critically important for there to be independent decision-makers, free of conflict of interest, who can take an independent view,? she said.

She then tied the administration?s decision on the pipeline to climate change, an issue that has regained prominence as a result of Hurricane Sandy. In the days following Sandy?s landfall, in fact, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg endorsed President Barack Obama for his leadership on climate change.

How Obama decides on the pipeline ?signals where the U.S. is headed in terms of importing dirty fuels, inconsistent with an administration that is committed to fighting climate change,? Droitsch said.

?We?re confident President Obama understands the seriousness around the issues surrounding this pipeline. Approving it sends the wrong signal about our country?s commitment to climate change. Yes, he?s under a lot of pressure, but the public is very concerned about this. It?s not a decision I know he?ll view lightly.?

Increase The Value Of Your House With This Great Home ...

There?s alot of expenses and work that come with owning your own home! It is not uncommon to project costs of 1-3 percent of the home?s value in annual improvements. However, there are ways to cut back on cost, so here are some tips to help you save money and still be able to improve and upkeep the home you love.

Motion detecting lights not only make your home more secure, they also improve your home?s exterior. Motion sensor lights are activate by movement. Unwanted guests may pass on burglarizing your home if lights suddenly come on, alerting you to their presence.

Look into the gutter guards if you dislike cleaning your gutters or live in a wooded area. These guards keep leaves and other debris out of your gutters, enabling water to flow smoothly and efficiently away from your roof. Its always worth it to go through and maintain and clean your gutters.

Woord or tile floors can be very costly to replace. You can add a stain to your concrete foundation to save money. This adds to the contemporary look of your home while adding versatility too.? If you have carpeting, try hiring a professional carpet cleaner or even just ordering a powerful spot stain remover off line.? You would be pleasantly surprised at what a difference a good stain remover can make in the look and quality of your carpeting without spending a lot of money.

Make sure that the exterior of your home is accounted for when remodeling. Keep your lawn trimmed and free of leaves, and consider planting flowers. You may also plant some nice shrubs. Always make sure you sweep your sidewalk. If your roof or exterior walls are stained, have them power-washed. Clean your windows till they sparkle and shine. This creates a clean look, which can leave a lasting impression on your visitors.

Think about insulating your home for your next big project. Windows and doors should all be weather-stripped. This will reduce the exchange of air from the outside of your home to the inside and vice versa. All of your cooling and heating systems will be more efficient. This will help you keep your bills down.

Make sure to turn your water off whenever you are dealing with any sort of plumbing. Before you begin, know where the shut off valve is, or you may quickly be in a flood of water when repairing a sink.

Look for the style you really love before jumping into anything. The decorating style that you choose should serve as the catalyst for your project. Without a plan, you can easily end up with mixed styles. Making improvements can be very expensive.

If you want to make a room feel more tranquil, use cool, pale shades of purple, green or blue. Think about what type of furniture and other things in your house are going to go good with the colors you choose. To complete the tranquil theme use potpourri or lightly scented candles.

Now that you?ve come to the end of this article, you?re more likely to improve your home without damaging your budget. Home improvement projects can turn your home into a more enjoyable place.

7.3-magnitude quake strikes off Japan

By Alex Zolbert and Jethro Mullen, CNN

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: Only minor injuries were reported
  • A one-meter tsunami comes ashore in the northeast prefecture of Miyagi
  • There is no threat of a widespread tsunami in the Pacific, a warning center says
  • The 7.3-magnitude quake shook buildings in Tokyo

Tokyo (CNN) -- A powerful earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan on Friday evening, rattling buildings in Tokyo and setting off a small tsunami.

It also jarred nerves in a nation still recovering from the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 that killed thousands of people and triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in a quarter century.

Some roads were closed and rail services suspended in the northeastern prefecture of Miyagi, where a one-meter (3-foot) tsunami rolled ashore. It was followed by four other waves ranging from eight to 16 inches. Only minor injuries were reported immediately, including five in Miyagi and five on the outskirts of Tokyo.

Miyagi was one of the areas that suffered the worst of the destruction from the 9.0-magnitude quake and resulting tsunami in 2011.

The weaker, 7.3-magnitude quake on Friday took place further out at sea -- 462 kilometers (287 miles) east-northeast of Tokyo at a depth of 36 kilometers (22 miles) -- the U.S. Geological Survey said, slightly revising the initial location it gave.

It didn't create a widespread threat of a tsunami in the Pacific, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011 killed more than 15,000 people in Japan. It caused the formation of 30-foot walls of water that swept away rice fields, engulfed entire towns, and tossed houses and cars onto highways.

The combined natural disasters did severe damage to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, setting off meltdowns at reactors at the facility that contaminated a large area. No damage was reported at the country's nuclear power facilities after Friday's quake.

Radiation levels in fish caught near the area remain high long after the 2011 meltdowns, suggesting contamination from the site might still be seeping into Pacific waters, a U.S. researcher said in October.

(AP Photo/Pat Sullivan, File)

(AP) ? Jeff Keppinger, Joe Blanton, Jason Bay and a diamond full of players wound up in different places Wednesday at the winter meetings while top contenders waited for a pair of free-agent prizes to make their decisions.

Eric Chavez, Randy Choate and Sean Burnett also joined new teams. The lone trade was minor, with Detroit sending left-hander Andy Oliver to Pittsburgh for a young catcher.

Former MVP Josh Hamilton and former Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke remained in play. They're the driving forces in this market and depending on where they go, more moves are likely to follow.

Texas would like to re-sign Hamilton, at the right price. The slugger was in Nashville this week but has left, and his agent met with Rangers general manager Jon Daniels on Tuesday night.

"Obviously, one of the bigger dominoes," Daniels said. "Trying to get the first one to fall."

New York Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey keeps drawing attention. He lives near the Opryland Hotel and dropped in for a visit, though there's no change in his situation. Signed for next season, he wants a new contract while several clubs, including Boston, want to trade for the reigning NL Cy Young winner.

In the meantime, some deals stayed on deck. No telling if any of them will get done before the meetings end Thursday with the Rule 5 draft for players left off 40-man rosters.

"We wondered if one of the guys went off, (if) it would speed up. We'll see," Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said. "It seems like it may be moving a little bit."

Also in the mix: Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, amid speculation Arizona is trying to get him in a multi-team swap.

All-Star third baseman David Wright of the New York Mets became the first player to step up to the brightly lit podium in the press room. Standing at the spot where trades and signings are usually announced, his appearance was expected.

Wright was in town to talk about his $138 million, eight-year contract, the largest in team history. The lifetime .301 hitter is a six-time All-Star and turns 30 in two weeks. A Mets fan growing up, Wright said he wanted to spend his entire career with the club.

"I've never pictured myself in a different uniform," he said.

"It just feels like there's so much unfinished business and I'd like to finish what I've started," he added. "Honestly, it wouldn't mean as much to me winning somewhere else as it would obviously winning here."

Away from the dais where Wright spoke, inside the suites at the sprawling 2,881-room hotel, several players changed jerseys.

Keppinger agreed with the Chicago White Sox on a $12 million, three-year contract, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there was no announcement.

The versatile infielder hit .325 with a career-high nine home runs and 40 RBIs for Tampa Bay last season. At 32, the well-traveled Keppinger is known for making contact and has more walks than strikeouts during his eight-year career with the Rays, San Francisco, Houston, Cincinnati, Kansas City and the Mets.

Keppinger is likely to play third base for the White Sox. Kevin Youkilis finished the season at that spot for Chicago last season, then became a free agent. The New York Yankees and Arizona also had been interested in Keppinger.

Arizona wound up with Chavez, giving the corner infielder a $3 million, one-year contract, a person with knowledge of the deal said.

The 34-year-old Chavez hit .281 with 16 homers in 278 at-bats for the Yankees, seeing time at first base, third base and designated hitter. The six-time Gold Glove winner lives in the Phoenix area.

Bay and the Seattle Mariners agreed on a one-year deal, a person familiar with the negotiation said. The 34-year-old outfielder is hoping to resurrect his career with the Mariners after three disappointing and injury-plagued seasons with the Mets.

The Los Angeles Angels added Blanton and Burnett to their retooled pitching staff, and St. Louis signed Choate for its bullpen.

The Chicago Cubs and outfielder Nate Schierholtz closed in on a $2.25 million, one-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations said. Baltimore kept outfielder Nate McLouth and Colorado re-signed pitcher Jeff Francis.
