Whether you are embarking on a new fitness regime or are simply looking for ways to improve your performance, nutrition is a key part of getting fit and staying on top of your game.

Eating the right foods for fitness is vital for ensuring that your body is sufficiently fuelled both before and after exercise. Getting your diet right will not only mean that you are able to work out better and for longer, it will allow your body to repair itself after exercise and will mean that you see much more visible results of your exercise regime in your body.

Of course, one of the most important nutrients for fitness is protein, as this allows your muscles to remain strong and to repair themselves after you work out. Protein can be found in dairy products such as milk, cheese and eggs, as well as in meats such as chicken and turkey and in nuts and vegetarian proteins like soya and Quorn.

Many people who exercise or workout regularly choose to drink protein shakes before or after a workout to further assist their muscles and ensure that they are getting plenty of protein.

As well as protein, carbohydrates are important for fitness, especially if you are doing cardiovascular exercise such as running, cycling or swimming. Cardiovascular exercise requires energy, and carbohydrates provide this.

In particular, complex carbohydrates provide long-term, long-lasting energy. So, not only will you have the stamina to work out for longer, you will be less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks such as crisps and chocolate in-between meals, which is of benefit to your health in general.

Complex carbohydrates are found in wholemeal bread, pasta and rice, as well as in oats and wheat germ, so try to incorporate more of these foods into your daily diet.
