Keep Your Kids Educated About Emergencies

When Disaster Strikes

Natural disasters and emergencies are terrifying and threatening to everyone, but the most important thing in those crucial moments is survival. To ensure your survival and that of your family, it is important that you know what to do in all major possible emergency scenarios. It is also important that you educate your family, even your children, about what needs to be done in the event of an emergency. Although it might be frightening to them at first, making a game of learning exits, a plan of where to meet in the house or perhaps at a neighbor?s house and gathering supplies for first aid and survival kits can make children feel safer and better informed.

Bad Weather Blues

It is important to teach children about natural disaster safety. In the event of a tornado, a family plan should be made to meet up in the basement. Store board games, cards, snacks and bottled water in the basement so that if your family is there waiting out a bad storm, kids can be distracted with family time. A radio is a useful thing to have as well, so you can track the weather as it happens.

Too Hot To Handle

When it comes to fire safety, have all upstairs rooms equipped with chain ladders for climbing down if necessary. Draw a map out of the house and come up with different routes to follow based on where the fire might be. Teach your children about how to feel a door in order to see if it is hot to make sure that they do not enter a room full of fire. Have a designated meeting spot such as a neighbor?s house, and be sure to explain that going back for clothes and toys is not an option. Anything ruined can be replaced.

Is There A Doctor In The House?

Teaching your child to call 911 in a medical or otherwise situational emergency is a large part of family emergency preparedness. If the unimaginable happens and your child is home alone with you and you have a medical issue and become incapacitated, your child must know how to calmly dial 911. They must be able to recite their address and explain that their parent is ill and needs an ambulance. If your child wants to practice dialing 911, most area police stations and ambulance dispatchers are happy to take a moment out of their day if you go to their workplace to sit down and role play a little with your child. It is important to explain that dialing 911 is absolutely for emergencies only.
